Recap: The Deboss Legion target Torin, and in doing so reveal a horrifying secret from his past.

Zigg‘s Thoughts: I’m somewhat surprised how much plot Kyoryuger has been piling on in recent weeks. Fresh off of one two-parter (which admittedly was mostly setup for toy shilling) we’re now straight into another one, and one which looks to have some interesting ramifications for the long term plot of the show.

Torin’s felt a distressingly flimsy part of the setup for quite some time now. Yes, he’s the voice of reason who tells everyone when the Deboss show up, and he’s jumped in once or twice for a save. But there’s been no backstory, no characterisation and precious little screentime given to the big blue bird. I’d begun to believe he was just an artifact left over from previous Sentai trappings, which state that the team always has to have a boss. The revelation that he used to be a bad guy though is an interesting one that could potentially give him a much more fleshed out role. The rivalry between Chaos and Torin has simmered in the background a bit, but this is a chance to kick it up a notch, and I’m hoping we get a relatively complex reason for Torin defecting that helps build the ongoing plot.

The other intriguing aspect of this episode is the reappearance of Daigo’s father, who once again has a weird delivery for Torin. While being uncertain of what actually the stuff is, it has to be tied in to the whole ‘Torin is a Debo Monster’ thing. It’s pleasing that story is still holding back a few mysteries, but I’ve increasingly got issues with the way Daigo perceives his father. I’m not asking that he suddenly becomes an emotional wreck but he just seems so relentlessly…unaffected by the sight of the man who abandoned him years ago that it rings false. I suspect it’s another example of Daigo’s role as the Red Ranger rendering him basically invincible and while it certainly fits well with his upbeat personality, I can’t help but feel it’s a serious squandered opportunity to find out a little more about what makes the man tick.

In any case, it’s an encouraging sign to see Kyoryuger continue to develop its plot in such a surprisingly competent way. I don’t think anyone believes for a second Torin is actually dead, and indeed the preview confirms that is not the case. Let’s see how the team deals with this shocking revelation next week.

Random Observations

  • I really wanted Endorf’s sudden entrance to be accompanied by the Kool-Aid man’s “OH YEAAAAAHHHH”.
  • The three idols we see on posters are all Sentai alumi. #1 is Nagasawa Nao, aka Hurricane Blue from Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger, who’s also popped up in a bunch of other Sentai/Rider shows. #2 is Arisa Komiya who was Yellow Buster in Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters. #3 is Meeko who appeared in the recently released Kyoryuger movie. To take the joke even further, Nao and Komiya are billed under character names – Nao is ‘Nono Nana’, Hurricane Blue’s in-story stage name, while Komiya is ‘Angie Sue’, who was one of those strangers-who-are-identical-to-the-main-character who pop up a lot in these shows. Phew, got all that?
  • Gothy Haruka Tomatsu is disturbingly attractive as well as just plain disturbing. Given how much Candelia’s human form shows up here, props to Tomatsu and the suit actors for matching movements and mannerisms very well.
  • Dancing heroes of the week – Colour co-ordinated gym guys.
  • Next week promises hot Ramirez unmorphed fight action. Hell yeah.
