Recap: Sonora and Yura face off against each other in one last match.
Gee’s Thoughts: After the drama that’s been going on for the past few episodes, Yura’s out of her funk and ready to fight her senpai one last time. It’s a heated match with neither truly able to get the advantage over the other. Honestly, I would have been happy if this had been the main content of the episode, In fact, I’d argue that the episode would be even better if it had just been about Yura and Sonora reconciling their differences through airsoft. Still, I can’t help but be tickled pink by Rento’s entrance into the battle to aid Yura. The scene the two share is probably the most heartwarming moment in the episode. If there’s anyone Yura truly considers a friend, it’s Rento, who was the one who had gone through all the trouble of recruiting Yura and sticking by her side this entire time. I don’t know what’s the female equivalent of a bromance, but that’s totally what those two got going on.
As the sun sets, Yura brings back her reality warping powers, but with some serious power boosts, allowing her the ability to literally rewrite all of reality within the radius of the entire campus, turning every student at the school into a willing and enthusiastic airsoft player. I shit you not, Yura literally pulls a Fate/Zero Rider and basically summons her own army of airsofters, Ionian Hetairoi style, for the club to fight against. Oh, and she also rewrites fucking time, allowing the C3 club to continue playing for as long as they can. It’s ridiculous and absurd, but wholly enjoyable all the same.
Overall, this episode was everything C3 originally billed itself to be. A lighthearted show about cute girls having fun playing airsoft, as if Gainax is trying to remind us all why we started watching this show in the first place. It even ends with a perfectly thematic bookend. Yura attempting to recruit two new girls to the C3 club is a grand culmination of the show, having found her balance between fun loving and enthusiastic about the game. No longer is she the shy girl too afraid to speak to strangers, nor is she victory obsessed tryhard she initially became. While the other characters remain pretty flat throughout the show, Yura’s character arc has really made it all worth it. In the end, C3 has really surprised me with its heart and soul. It’s not going to revolutionize anything, but it rose far and above the expectations that were placed on it.
However, this does lead to some questions. This episode was the perfect finale for C3, neatly wrapping up everything, culminating in Yura’s growth and development. But this was the penultimate episode. There’s one episode left of the series. What could they possible do after this? Will it focus on the “new” generation of the C3 club, with Yura as its leader? Will it just be cute airsoft antics? I can’t for the life of me understand why they would have one more episode after having just had such a great closer.
