Premise: Banri Tada is a freshman in law school new to Tokyo. When making friends with, a kindred spirit, he meets Koko Kaga, his new friend’s self-proclaimed fiancee.
Marlin’s Verdict: Golden Execution
I didn’t know what to think going into this blind. While this is from the writer of Toradora a story I 90% enjoyed up until the ending, there was still that nagging feeling I might get burned again. Toradora had a great cast of likeable characters, so this show had to sell me quick or lose me fast. Thankfully, not much time is wasted on introducing us to our main character before we get the first look at the real tour de force, Koko. From slapping the unassuming Matsuo with her presence as much as with that bouquet to sitting behind our main characters quietly for so long that even the audience takes a minute to realize she’s been there the entire time, I see good things from this lead heroine.
The only problem right now is that the opening seems to imply this is a love story between Banri and Koko, and yet at this point she’s still obsessed over Matsuo. Granted, Toradora started under a similar situation, so we’ll have to see how they evolve the relationship between these characters. From what I see, making Banri their go-between will be an interesting way of exploring this previously existing relationship while growing a new one.
However, with so much prominence given to Koko, it makes the inclusion of secondary heroines Linda and Chinami somewhat strange. The last thing I’d want is some kind of love triangle lasting the whole show, so I hope this is an attempt to explore having female friendships while also having a relationship with someone else. Either way, I was really impressed with this first episode, let’s hope that continues to be the case.
Lifesong’s Verdict: Obsessively Charming
I have a soft spot for devoted characters that I can’t really explain. When they go full crazy well… yeah it doesn’t go away. Seeing our heroine chase after “her man” like a hunter going after it’s prey was more amusing for me than I should probably admit for more reasons than I should probably be honest about. So yeah, she had me at “I removed the thorns”. I’m in, I can’t wait to see more.
