Recap: The crew of the I-401 reaches Gunzo’s home town safely. However, once they get settled in for repairs, the military attempts to take Iona from them.
We take a bit of a breather from the action this week. I’m glad that Arpeggio does address the fact that even the most powerful of warships needs munitions supplies. I was wondering where the I-401 got all its torpedoes and living supplies, and this tidily wraps that up. It also perfectly encapsulates the uneasy alliance the ship has with the rest of humanity. As normal people are understandably scared of any Fog ship, it’s surprising they even let them in in the first place.
The 3d animation looked way better this week up until Senator Beardface. Something 3d models really aren’t good for is making lumps of hair look realistic. Every time his beard moved independent of his mustache while talking really broke the scene. When I’m watching an anime, I like to pretend that that girl’s hair really is just in tight pigtails and they’re not just a pair of spiky yams. At the very least, hair seems to be the only huge problem as the physiques are actually quite well modeled, and in most stills the 3d is hardly noticeable.
This week continues the most confusing problem that comes up when analyzing this show. Why does Iona, who has had interaction with humans for easily over a year, have less emotional and cultural capacity than Mental Models that haven’t even met humans yet? Every boat we’ve met so far has had at least some personality, but when it comes to Iona it’s always BEEP BORP I AM A ROBOT OR SOMETHING. I’m also not sure what’s up with the little kid they found there. One usually doesn’t have that kind of scene without implicating she’s going to be a major character in the future. With more ships inbound, it looks like we’ll get another fight. If it’s anything like the one with Takao, I can’t wait to see it.

400 and 402 are also quite emotionless. I wonder if it’s a submarine thing.
Submarines are cold and distant?
Yeah, I suppose that would work. It’s still weird but I’d accept that. I also find it weird that while all I-400 class submarines look the same, all the similar looking battleships are different.
