Noragami Episode 2

Recap

Hiyori is still struggling with her new spirit form, but Yato is in no shape to help her. In an attempt to get him a new Regalia, Hiyori accidentally puts herself in grave danger, requiring Yato to make the save.

Well, Noragami really isn’t wasting any time getting us acclimated to this world. I did find it funny that with all the abstract monsters in the world, one that just looks like a normal oarfish is what scared that baby. No wonder kids cry all the time! The phantoms do bring up a lot of questions. Why are there so many of them? Do the gods not care about their existence? It seems like they have a tangible effect on normal people, so why do the gods just let them run amuck? Are they just that powerful, or are there just not that many gods to begin with?Β  It does seem weird that Yato is the only god Hiyori has met, but I imagine that won’t be the case for too long.

This process of getting a Regalia is the biggest draw this episode. We got a taste for the form and function with Yato’s rude assistant in the very first episode, but even with that I wasn’t expecting the deeper connection there seems to be between the two. Hard to say for sure, but it seems like some kind of Vulcan Mind-Meld type deal goes into effect once a god places the spirit into its service. Considering Yuki is looking to be a major character I wonder if we’ll get his backstory all at once, or if it will be dripped by Yato as we get to know him.

I get that Yato is still pretty much a nobody in the grand scheme of things, but I do hope things start getting better soon. Sure, having a god being called pathetic and undermined by his own allies is funny and all, but if it’s like that forever then I fear the show will stagnate quite quickly. Considering he just got a major upgrade with his new Regalia, I hope we see even better fights from this point onwards.
