Nobunagun Episode 3

Gee’s Thoughts

A quieter episode this time around, as Sio is taken in for some extensive training. Figures as much, I doubt Sio weight more than a 100 pounds, so I can only imagine how tough it is to control that giant thing she calls a gun. Robert Capa’s powers almost seem to conveniently built for training people, but I don’t particularly mind. We needed a minor info dump to get our bearings on the kinda world Nobunagun is operating on. Still a shame we don’t get to meet any of the other E-Gene holders. Seeing as Robert Capa isn’t in the OP, that means there are likely many more E-Gene holders than just the ones that have been shown to us. Similar to Kill la Kill, Nobunagun has me excited to see what kinda weird crazy powers its characters posses.

Sio befriending the military dudes and geeking out over military hardware was probably the highlight of the episode, though I do find it somewhat questionable that so many grown men want to give Sio attention, ranging from autographs to their banana (and by banana, I do in fact mean the fruit). Boys will be boys I suppose, and they seem wholly harmless for the most part. Of course, introducing a crew of redshirts mainly serves one purpose, and that’s getting them all killed. I’m not going to instantly assume that they are in fact dead, what with anime’s annoying inability to make death a permanent affliction. That said, the anime hasn’t shied away from showing casualties so for all we know, this is going to be Sio’s first true trial by fire. Still, looks like we’re gonna be jumping back into the action next week. Here’s hoping we get to meet more of the E-Gene holders.

Marlin’s Thoughts

Not every episode can be action all the time. I appreciate Nobunagun’s efforts to still make an enjoyable infodump, but it would be disingenuous to call it anything but. I like Robert Capa’s introduction to the overall E-Gene holder spectrum as it shows just how different the powers can be depending on the person. I like that they don’t feel the need to give everyone a weapon, but merely interesting powers that could be used effectively when working in a group.

As soon as I saw the soldiers, I knew a death scene was coming up. The whole thing was just too sweet for it to not end tragically. I still think its creepy these dudes were lusting after a 16 year old, but I guess being perverts has kind of been an armed forces stereotype for ages. At first I thought the fact that these soldiers were hurricane chasers meant that the aliens always hid in natural disasters, but it seems that was just a set-up for the next crisis. Not quite sure how Sio is going to tackle being in the middle of a Hurricane, but it definitely looks to be an exciting fight.
