Recap
DOGOO discovers that the next Invasion Object plans to ride the winds of a hurricane until it makes landfall in the inland of America. Sio along with a couple other E-Gene holders are mobilized to deal with the threat. However, Sio is the only one with a ranged attack, meaning the entire operation’s success comes down to her ability to perform under pressure. Afterwards, she meets some more E-Gene holders part of Jack’s main squad. They’re weird.
Gee’s Thoughts
The fourth episode gives us some long awaited bad alien killing action as Sio is brought in along with Jack and the newly introduced Galileo to take down an Invasion Object with a pretty nifty plan. As if to make matters worse, if Sio doesn’t kill the thing in one shot, it’ll release its clutch of eggs, leading to a widespread invasion of the Atlantic coast. No pressure right?
Luckily, through the power of crazy dancing and chanting, a Nobunaga-channeling Sio manages to get the job done. Of course, this is an Shonen anime, that wasn’t even the monster’s true form! We get to see Jack and Sio team up to take down the remaining aliens through the power of projectile based teamwork. Seriously, that was some straight up A-Team shit. The biggest thing the crew takes from fight though is that for better or worse, the Invasion Objects are learning to adapt to humanity’s strategies. Are they all part of some kind of hive mind, or is it something even more devious than that?
Well the fifth episode helps clear things up as well as introduce a bunch of E-Gene holders to the cast. Turns out when an Invasion Object explodes, it sends out dozens of tiny parasites, one of which holds the memories of the alien, and by allowing itself to be eaten, works its way up the food chain til it makes its way to an Invasion Object. Pretty crafty, and much more unique than the standard evil alien hivemind.
As for the E-Gene holders, while I am a fan of the Chinese classical novel Water Margin, in retrospect, it’s a bit odd that one of the E-Gene holders would be channeling a fictional character. I mean, you couldn’t get like, Lu Bu or Ip Man or something? Not like China is lacking in historical figures over the course of its 4000 year existence. Minor nitpick aside, the rest of the cast are a rather goofy bunch, ranging from perverts to…more perverts. Yeah, it’s that kind of cast. The idea of the reincarnation of Mahatma Gandhi hitting on a Japanese school girl is hilarious though. Still, just as I hoped, they all have their fair share of strange-but-cool powers that actually do a great job of thematically fitting their historical figure.
With even more E-Gene holders being introduced next week, I look forward to the continued craziness that only Nobunagun can give me.
