Recap
DOGOO deduces that the Invasion Objects are using a hidden tunnel under South America to quickly move between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Their suspicions confirmed, the tunnel is guarded by a gigantic Invasion Object. Thus the First and Second Platoons are brought together to bring the beat down, assuming their own lack of team solidarity doesn’t bring them down first.
Gee’s Thoughts
Man, Nobunagun is really like a Saturday morning cartoon. The heroes are in some situation for the first half, bad guy shows up, awesome things happen. Rinse and repeat. Not that I particularly mind of course. And like any proper Saturday morning cartoon, there’s the inevitable episode where everyone hates each other’s guts and acts like a general asshole to each other. After their scouting mission goes awry, Galileo is seriously injured while Vidocq continues to be the biggest asshole in the group. Seriously, it’s like he’s purposely trying to be scummiest person in the cast. This being a piece of Japanese fiction, I’m going to assume later it will be revealed that he suffers from some terrible tragic backstory and thus puts up a facade of uncaring because he’s afraid of getting hurt, because apparently nobody in anime is allowed to just be a piece of shit.
In all seriousness though, I am a little disturbed by how callous he is, especially to a girl who is basically obsessed with him. It’s pretty obvious he’s only using said affection as a tool to further his gains. I can only hope the poor girl wises up before her adoration gets her killed by another one of Vidocq’s plans. While revealing him to be the traitor would be too obvious, it does seem like a possibility considering how much of a bastard he is.
Of course, things don’t seem to be going so how with the rest of the crew. Geronimo and Cyx predictably butt heads with Jack on a regular basis, which I’m sure is great for the group dynamic. Ignoring the friendship drama (if anybody on this boat can even be called friends), we had a pretty fun episode on our hands. Sio realizing the Invasion Object’s true goal of taking out the carrier was pretty great, and her last minute save was honestly done in a totally unexpected way. I had expected her to just shoot it and eat the explosion. Instead, we get a genuinely fun subversion of the heroic sacrifice that basically saves everyone. See, even Shonen heroes can be smart every now and then!
Of course, the giant Invasion Object guarding the tunnel is still alive, can regenerate, and shoots fucking bio-bombs, so it’s not like our heroes are out of the fire just yet. The next episode preview looks to be another breather as Sio recovers from getting hit by the shrapnel caused by the explosion. Hopefully we can wrap that up quickly and get back to crazy people doing crazy things to crazy bad guys.
