Premise

Cocoa is a young japanese girl moving into an idyllic German river town. Despite this being the opportunity for some fish out of water antics, as soon as she gets to her new home, everyone conveniently speaks Japanese and it transitions into a show about cute girls doing cute things in a cafe.

Marlin’s Verdict: Lagomoérphs

I am seriously confused about this show’s setting. It would be one thing if Cocoa and everyone else actually were german, and it’s just in japanese for sake of ease, but the Rabbit House(in english?)’s menu is entirely in Japanese, and apparently its customers speak it as well. I know I shouldn’t let this kind of narrative inconsistancy get to me in a K-On! caliber show, but it seriously bugs me. It just feels like its using the germanic aesthetics to make everything look pretty. If that was the case, why then make everything else japanese? Absolutely baffling.

rabbit1dAs for the show itself, it is sufficiently cute, that’s for sure. Cocoa is on the wrong side of the endearing v. annoying scale of moe, but she’s at least counterbalanced by the more demure Chino. Rize is a bit of a weird in the whole affair. Starting out as some weird fanservice bait half naked in a closet, she then proceeds to threaten Cocoa with a gun, and then have the entire incident brushed off. Was that supposed to be the joke? Either way I guess she rounds out the ditz-stoic-spaz trio you see a lot in moe with her weird and energetic antics. Still, cute for the sake of cute shows need to do a lot to keep me interested, and this show just did not make the cut.
