Sgt. Frog is another comedy show near and dear to my heart. I found it a few years after its english dub was released in 2009. If it weren’t for Cromartie High it would be easy to call it the funniest, dumbest gag comedy of all time. That’s not a mark against it though, even being next to Cromartie in contention for that award is a credit unto itself. Funimation also did a great job in localizing it for an American audience. Many common japanese tropes were kept the same, but much like the Ghost Stories gag dub, a lot of the incidental dialogue was mixed with funny American pop culture quips and references that . If you’ve been watching the popular shows lately and listen to the first episode, you might notice the narrator sounds somewhat familiar. I am utterly convinced it’s just the same character who narrates the spectacular adventures of Space Dandy. In Space. I mean Sgt. Frog’s universe is weird enough to occupy the same area as Space Dandy’s that it makes sense to me.
Nothing encapsulates the unique brand of crazy that is Sgt. Frog quite like its ending. You’d think being in complete 3D (2004 era 3D no less) would be a mark against it, but with how stupid Sgt. Frog is it works in the most brilliant way. In most 3D, your characters moving disjointedly like crazed stickmen would be something to scorn. Here though, its just plain funny. The crew just thrashes around on a disco floor in space while a giant golden statue of Keroro blasts off the satellite of funk to spread Keroro’s glorious message to the universe. The whole thing culminates in the Sarge wearing an outfit that would make John Travolta blush wearing… well an afro. What else would you expect?
The song itself is much like the OP, an equally ridiculous affair, where a song seems to sound normal but is really just full of nonsense lyrics dealing with Sgt. Frog. The funky disco absolutely nails the ridiculous feel of the entire thing. Sgt. Frog was a great show, but I do wonder how memorable it would be in my mind without this completely bonkers ED at the end to have me laughing from start to finish. Just remember, don’t pull it, don’t hold it, and don’t touch it. Respect the ‘fro…g.

Uhhh ya that looks odd. Though the ED is pretty danceable
