Premise

Souji Mitsuka loves girls with twin-tails more than anything else in the world. That’s lucky, because it means he’s the perfect man to fight back against twin-tail hating evil aliens! Unfortunately the perfect ‘man’ is not exactly what’s needed in this situation…

Zigg’s verdict:  Junk Food

I sort of enjoyed this. There, I said it. That does not however make it a good show. It’s  another one of those weird anime that panders to such a singularly specific fetish (in this case, twin-tails) but still manages to chuck all sorts of other peversions into the blender. Protagonist Souji is every bad harem protagonist ever, a detestable creep whose blatant sexual harassment should get him locked up several times over the course of a single episode, yet is mysteriously irresistible to women. Then we’ve got the standard tsundere childhood friend, mysterious posh student council president etc etc etc. It’s tired, creepy and so played out it’s barely worthy of interest.

What saved the show for me is how very weird it all gets. To be clear, some of it is definitely weird for weirdness’s sake, but it’s difficult not to see things like crazy space paedophile lizard or the Shocker-esque mooks and at least not be mildly amused. The show also hits me right in my weak point by slyly riffing a lot of Super Sentai tropes. That in itself is not enough to make a good comedy, but there’s just a very slight hint of self-aware parody that makes the less interesting bits bearable. Amazingly, I might actually give this a second episode.

Aqua’s verdict: Poe’s Law Says Hi

When will anime learn that acknowledging the fact that you’re a creepy pervert doesn’t make you anything less of a creepy pervert? Gonna Be The Twin-Tail! adheres to this principle almost as accurately as its title does to the laws of English grammar and common sense, and introduces us to Souji Mitsuka, the oh so hilarious kind of male protagonist whose single identifiable trait is that he really gets off on A Thing. Said Thing, in this show’s pitiable case, is twin tails. Souji loves twin tails so much he will reduce every single female character in the show to the kind of twin tails they wear and mention the bloody things in every other line, creating such highly screencappable and retweetable nonsense as ‘the answer is always twin tails’ which will most certainly be hilarious for some people who are as unreasonably into twin tails as he is and who fail to realize that literally nothing about any joke in this entire show would change if you were to replace the word ‘twin tails’ with ‘lettuce’, ‘knit sweaters’ or ‘chocking on your own vomit’. Then again, in a world where mothers make blowjob jokes about their son’s best friend and girls with small breasts have transphobic slurs slung at them, the guy’s gotta be the very pinnacle of hilarity.

Of course, because Souji is a man who really likes twin tails, he is surrounded by girls who think he is a massive creeper for obsessing over twin tails but still have no problem with having twin tails simply because this is a show about twin tails. In other words, if you don’t particularly get off on hairstyles, or have a general distaste for them being deified to the point of creepiness without a shred of actual self-awareness, Gonna Be The Twintail! is not for you. It is wacky in the shallowest possibly way, featuring pointless toku tropes that only serve to replace the big neon banners yelling “THIS IS A PARODY YOU DUMB SHIT” which is funny because we took something and then made it about our wacky fetish ha ha ha this has truly never been done before. All of this show’s ‘humour’ exists only because it can’t hope to get away with just showing pictures of girls with twin tails. It acknowledges how silly its obsession with the damn things is only to not be written off as the toxic, overly specific fetish-catering, pervert-joking, transformation-sequence-lacking wankbait it actually is. Gonna Be The Twintail! a hollow, vapid, gaping void of nothingness that uses its spoof status not as a source of inspiration, but as an alibi.

  1. Uhm… that’s the second time I read someone referring to that remark about Souji being “the dessert” as a blowjob joke. I… I just read it as meaning that Souji would be there and the mom knew the girl has the hots for him, nothing more. Am I too hopelessly naive or are you reading too much into it? I tend to get the feeling that these shows ARE pervy, but of a very specific brand of perviness which shies away from excessively explicit sex references. Waifu purity etc. etc., you know the riff.

    • I’m pretty much with you in that I thought it was a general reference to the fact the mum wants them to get together, but you can spin it either way I suppose.
