“Let’s Go Eat Some Italian Food”
Fridays at 12:30 pm EST on Crunchyroll
Josuke and Okuyasu check out the new Italian restaurant that just opened on the outskirts of Morioh.
This is one of my personal favorite parts of Diamond is Unbreakable, since it defies all we’ve come to expect since the start of Stardust Crusaders. From day one our heroes have been attacked by
TEKI STANDO enemy Stands at every turn, their lives in danger on a daily basis. The natural assumption is that Tonio is a psycho chef trying to poison or kill the crew, but nope, he’s just a nice guy who wants to use his Stand to help others and maybe make a little money on the side. There’s no catch, other than perhaps Araki clearly taking this opportunity to spooge about everything Italian.
The occasional easygoing story like this and the generally more relaxed vibe are what really make DU, I’d say. There’s certainly something to be said for the globetrotting journeys of Battle Tendency and Stardust Crusaders, but the comparatively lower stakes here make the tone more intimate, and make us care more. We want to protect the peace in Morioh just as much as Josuke and friends, and seeing kind-hearted folk like Tonio only make it moreso. Even the assholes the crew has fought already in previous episodes kind of mellow out, and I think that only adds personality to the setting.
So basically, yeah, Diamond is Unbreakable is great and I love it. Things are only going to get better.
- The CR subs give Tonio’s surname as “Trendy”, as his name in the manga – “Trussardi” – is a famous Italian fashion brand.
- The “harlot’s spaghetti” is better known as “spaghetti alla puttanesca”.
- Tonio wasn’t shot with the Stand Arrow and instead developed his Stand, Pearl Jam, through his drive to master the culinary arts.
