“Let’s Go Hunting!”

Fridays at 12:30 pm EST on Crunchyroll

Our resident JoJos (minus Oldseph) track down a pair of evil, Stand-using rats.

Iro’s thoughts

Fun fact: this is the fight that I used to convince our very own Gee-Man to read the Part 4 manga years ago. This was back sometime during the early days of the Stardust Crusaders anime, I believe. I started reading Part 4 because someone had finally started uploading proper scanlations to replace the infamous “Duwang” scans, but Gee didn’t want to because he (rightly so) figured an anime version was on the horizon. So I said to him, “Well, the part I’m reading right now has Josuke and Jotaro in the wilderness hunting down an evil, Stand-using rat. Also, its Stand is a mounted gun that shoots poison darts.” He started reading Part 4 that day.

Anyway, as far as I know it is compulsory that every part of JoJo needs at least one Stand-using animal – Part 3 has Iggy and Pet Shop, for instance (and I guess that cow was possessed by Anubis for a little bit) – and naturally DU is no exception. “Bug-Eaten” is, of course, as evil and vicious as any JoJo baddie can get, murdering other rats and melting down innocent humans for seemingly no good reason. Is it possible for a rat to be as much of a psychotic egomanic as DIO? Evidently so. I suppose it’s been shown that Stand-using animals are far more intelligent than regular-ass animals, though. Iggy had an internal monologue and everything!

This is also the first time since the fight with Angelo where Jotaro steps in to actually do something. It’s better that he doesn’t steal the spotlight, since Part 3 was his jam, so around these parts he gets to go halfsies between “Unstoppable Badass” and “Jobber”. Part 3 treated DIO as unstoppable by anyone except Jotaro specifically because of their mutual ability to stop time, and now that Jotaro can do it, there’s not really a good reason for anyone to be able to stand up (zing) to him at all. Therefore, Araki wrote in that Jotaro hadn’t practiced and Star Platinum can barely stop time at all now. Apart from that, it makes perfect sense for him to run interference as a decoy, because Crazy Diamond can heal him up right away.

Araki clearly had read a book on tracking or something before doing these chapters, because the lengthy asides get particularly egregious this week. We even get a long-awaited return of Mr. Omniscient Narrator to explain hunting terms! Stop me if you’re heard this one before, but the fight itself follows the usual ups and downs of a JoJo battle; it all just feels even more absurd because the crazed villain is an evil rat. These bizarre one-offs in Part 4 are honestly a big part of why I like it so much, and there are still more to come. I hope you’re enjoying it too.

Dorarara-bservations

  • Since it gained the ability to stop time, Star Platinum is now referred to as Star Platinum: ZA WARUDO The World. Also, its stats have changed: its “Developmental Potential” was A-ranked in Stardust Crusaders, but now it’s C-ranked, as Jotaro has further mastered his Stand.
  • The rat’s Stand is called Ratt. Natch.
