Premise

Kuroitsu-san is an overworked and underpaid designer for a company that makes tokusatsu monsters. Like, assuming tokusatsu was real and they make real monsters.

Jel’s verdict: I Want to Speak to a Manager…

There’s a lot of things going on in this episode. First, there’s the homage to tokusatsu shows like Kamen Rider, etc. Second, there’s the office comedy angle. Finally, we get cute anime girls because of course, there has to be cute anime girls. The result is a messy mix of ideas that don’t really stick together. While I found some of the ridiculous designs for the “villains” amusing, I didn’t find any of the jokes particularly funny and the random nudity toward the end kind of came out of nowhere. Again, did not seem like they had a solid plan here.

I do think the concept is silly enough that this could have worked, but as we always say around here, comedy is hard. The writer seems particularly passionate about tokusatsu, so I’m wondering if it would have worked better if they stayed focused on making Kamen Rider parodies instead of the office bits. Anything they could have done to clean up this mess would have helped. Of course, as someone who doesn’t care about tokusatsu, I don’t think even that would be enough to keep me interested in this, but at least it could find an audience. As it stands, not a lot to recommend here unless you’re really desperate for a wacky anime comedy.
