Euri’s verdict: Sherlock has a Geass now

It’s been a little while since I last watched something that made me wish I enjoyed it, but alas, here we are. Ron Kamonohashi’s Forbidden Deductions isn’t a bad show either, just to be clear, but the biggest takeaway from episode one is that the two main characters are just very annoying.

Totomaru, the bumbling but well-meaning investigator who is sent to work with Ron early in the episode, is very much a “speak first, think later” character. It’s definitely played for laughs, but hearing him make quips after everything Ron says gets old very quickly, and this is just the first episode. Ron himself is Hot Sherlock; he investigates crimes in an over-the-top, quirky fashion, and there really isn’t much else to his personality.

There is something here that you won’t find in a Sherlock show though, and it’s that they gave Ron his own Geass. The show doesn’t actually name this power, if it even is a power, but Ron uses his magic eyes to make the murderer throw himself from the top of a building just by commanding him to do so. It’s… a novel take on a detective story I suppose, but I hope that they eventually use it in fun ways to actually solve crimes. It’ll be a shame if it only shows up at the end of each investigation, just for Totomaru to have to save the life of whatever criminal they’ve caught.

All in all, it’s worth a look if you’re generally interested in Sherlock-adjacent shows, but I think your tolerance of Totomaru is going to dictate whether you make it through the episode as a fan or not.

  1. I tried a couple of chapters in MangaPlus when it first come out, but in the end Katekyo Hitman Reborn’s brand of comedy isn’t really my thing.

  2. My favorite part was the end where Ron basically says “I’ve made a bunch of people kill themselves ¯\_(ツ)_/¯” and Totomaru just takes it as an “oh, you!” moment and it’s supposed to be funny. Like… OK, but if we’re going down that route stop treating murder as a serious thing, maybe?
Anyway, I’m sick and tired of Sherlock Holmes references in anime, but also I like Ron’s seiyuu. I’ll probably watch a couple more episodes just for him.
