  1. “of course astro boy was in iraq” is probably one of the funniest sentences in the english language, especially considering the manga chapter where he fights for the peasants in vietnam.

i found the quick point about the robots having a choice to participate in the war to be super interesting, especially in regards to astro. on one hand, i feel like he should have known better not to get himself involved. i mean, in the original astro boy manga one of his seven special powers was being able to tell whether certain people were good or bad, i feel like he would have enough development in that power / common sense to know that maybe acting as the peacenik pr person in some bullshit middle eastern war isn’t exactly a good idea. but on the other hand, he’s still a kid. he’s called astro *boy* for a reason. he’s the product of a certain sad man’s vision to revive his dead son (and i’m sure most of you know how well that went). Of course he’d have the innocence of a small child, it’s literally part of his programming.

i can’t wait until jel gets to the later half of pluto. it might be really good now, but the second half is where i feel it really starts to shine.

also rip my boy brando, he was a real one

    • I think having Atom do PR was really fitting for the attitudes of the time, like I could see him reasoning that was a good compromise to “help” without actually having to fight. Or at least be manipulated into thinking that way.

  2. I didn’t even know there was going to be a Gridman movie and, now that I’ve watched it, I kinda wish I didn’t know.

I agree with Jel a lot so it may be a proximity thing, but it just seems to cheapen both works, and the fights just didn’t have any weight. Narratively or physically, at the end it just felt like smashing toys together. I reread some of your coverage and the fact that Gauma’s third thing is “best by dates” and not friends like Zigg surmised was way worse.

    • Having some time to think about it, my opinion on the movie hasn’t changed, so I don’t think it was just my raw immediate feelings. I did attempt to make a Gridman Don’t Cry shirt though.
