Premise
One of the Dark Lords of magical beasts, the eponymous Clevatess, decides on a whim to raise a human child. Violent antics ensue.
Iro’s verdict: Too Much Setup, Not Enough Punchline
I realized half an episode in that this was a double-length premiere and there was another episode and a half to go, and it felt like getting slapped in the face. Clevatess commits one of the cardinal sins of fantasy stories by deciding that a 35 minute lore dump is absolutely critical to understanding the plot – it isn’t – then having that backstory be utterly uninteresting. There’s no sense of novelty to its fantasy world, nor any sense of playfulness and genre awareness a-la Frieren. At this point in my anime career, I need more.
