Kokoro Connect Episode 3

Recap: The vulnerability of switching bodies is starting to unravel members of the Cultural Club. Can Taichi keep everyone afloat? Come to think of it, how many times have dick kick jokes been used in anime?

Well, we knew this was coming folks. Teenagers and their problems, amiright?

I kid, but it is quite a par for the course move to get into the problems every character has. My genre savvy meter may not be as well developed as Iro’s, but I think I smell a love martyring by Himeko to get Taichi and Iori to get together. You can tell she admires his attitude towards helping people. It was also quite shocking to see her be one of the people most affected by the negative possibilities of their situation. I suppose it makes sense that the one with the best head on their shoulders also has the most to think about, but it was still really sobering to see such a strong-willed girl crumble from the pressure.

My favorite scene of the week was the two boys finally breaking down and using a body swap as an opportunity to mess around and have film of the girls confessing. Miyuki Sawashiro is definitely making the rounds this season as far as showing off different voices than the stoic, but come to think of it I don’t think I can recall a particular show where she bashfully does anything. Himeko’s reaction and threat of retribution was fantastic, but was really the only humorous moment in an otherwise somber episode.

As the switching becomes more regular, Aoki realizes something’s wrong with Yui whenever he is swapped her. As Himeko feared, the upwelling of the different fears of the group may start to rip them apart. Yui doesn’t take this being revealed well, and runs off. After another body swap between him and Yui, Taichi decides to put things right. And by put things right I mean blasting himself right in the stones.

I kinda assumed with this kind of plotline that we would be getting into each person’s personal problems as no member can keep secrets if they can’t even keep their own bodies. I enjoy how this show is handling that kind of drama, but I do hope it’s not up to Taichi to save everyone. Everyone has problems, and if he is just there to fix everyone around him how is he supposed to grow himself? With our episode concluding with Himeko collapsing in Taichi’s arms, will we see another episode of Taichi’s Therapy Time or will there be more to this sudden snap?
