Recap: ED plots his revenge after his humiliating defeat while Kon is having trouble accepting his position as the Princess’ subordinate.
Jel’s Thoughts: SURPRISE! Out of all the high profile titles this season, this little low rent gem somehow managed to be the only show that left a positive impression on all the Glorio team members who watched it. Think of it as the Anti-Sword Art Online, both for it’s unification of the Glorio crew and its amusing lack of ambition.
This week’s episode continues the same irreverent tone as the first, giving us a glimpse into the aftermath of ED’s humiliating defeat. If I were a more clever man I’d probably write a bunch of puns about balls here, but Ixion does plenty of that to meet your Balls Joke quota for the week. Needless to say the humor stays at lowest common denominator levels but it works quite well for the episode’s appropriately silly resolution.
Aside from the balls humor, Kon is proving to be a much more hot blooded protagonist than I was expecting. After getting the impression he would be a pushover gaming nerd, it’s surprising to see how fiercely independent he is. He may still be pretty selfish and useless but at least he’s a man of action. It will be interesting to see if he actually ends up learning how to fight or if the writer’s will keep finding new ridiculous ways to bail him out.
Episode 2 was just about as fun a romp as the first, but I am a bit concerned about the show’s actual plot. It’s the most basic “Trapped in a Fantasy World” setup possible, and that’s OK as the show is incredibly self aware about it. But there are some scenes I do have to question how serious Ixion is trying to be, like Kon’s conversations this week with Super Trap and the Princess. If the show wants us to take it at least a little bit seriously (and I’m pretty sure it does) then I hope we get a few twists as our group marches to capital. That being said, there’s still a lot of potential for a great Comedy with Heart after all is said and done, so here’s hoping that’s what we get.
Lifesong’s Thoughts: Brains Base are on a roll lately. Ixion’s crude unambitious sense of humor and direction is just delightful to watch, and this weeks fight scene was also pretty incredible. I don’t think I’ve seen anything quite this nutty while still remaining somewhat serious since Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. The naming jokes may get old, but I think I’ll be sticking this one out for the long haul. If nothing else it’s nice to have something everyone on the blog enjoys for once.
