With the recent release here in the States and new art from the upcoming movie, I’ve had Marika and company on the brain the past couple of days. And so it’s time tackle the series’ monster of an OP, roughly translated as “Bodacious Space Symphony’s Movement VII «Infinite Love»”. Hey, with a name like Bodacious Space Pirates (or any of its various translations) you better bring an equally over the top OP. A collaboration by Super Sentai themed idol group Momoiro Clover Z and ex-Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman (yes, Megadeth), the song’s out of control overdrive vocals and guitar pyrotechnics sound like idol pop strapped to a rocket set to explode when it hits the sun. With an introduction so ridiculous it’s easy to see why most people were surprised when Pirates turns out to be less high school girl Star Wars and more high school girl Star Trek.
The song itself was a hit for the group, and I’d be remiss without including the somehow even more ridiculous live action video. I generally leave the toku to Zigg and Aqua, but even I have to admit multi-colored heroines dressed as pirates and riding through space on rocket bicycles with laser headlamps is pretty entertaining.

Considering Star Trek has now exceeded Star Wars in terms of action entertainment, you may need to swap around the sci-fi references.
That said, I had this song on endless repeat when I first heard it. It’s an outstanding song.

I do hope they make more episodes of Mouretsu Pirates, though with the characters actually engaged in piracy and interstellar politics as their main job rather than as high school students. I am getting fatigued of high school settings to be honest.
