Recap: Izumiko is having a change of heart about Teen Jerkwad and about going to school in Tokyo, which upsets the creepy Wamiya. Turns out, hes more than what he appears.
Once again, Red Data Girl has been given another shot to show me why I should care, and utterly failed. Izumiko has gained some confidence and has at least distanced herself from Amnesia‘s Sad Sack. It’s still not enough to make me care about her, nor understand why she and Teen Jerkwad are actually starting to get along. For two people who would rather have nothing to do with each other when they met, they sure warmed up quickly.
It might be a large part of why I’m not enjoying this supernatural story is that we get no explanation as to why Izumiko has the powers she does. I was okay when it was just some kind of strange technomancy, but now they’re implying it’s an all-powerful kind of power that can even materialize gods. Why does she get this power? Why is it important to protect her as this vessel? Wamiya does a decent job at Yandere and showing what kind of powers a released spirit could have, but at the same time it opened up its own questions. If he was just the god of the mountain, how does he conjure up thunderstorms? How does he turn into a crow? The kind of secrecy put about comes across much more annoying than intriguing.
If this was the purported “dark thriller” kind of stuff that was supposed to sell me on RDG, color me unimpressed. If the dance was supposed to make us fall in love with Izumiko, color me uninterested. In the interest of fairness considering how much hype was around this show, I will give it the courtesy of one more episode before I put it to bed for good.

I actually think episode 3 was probably the strongest one of the series so far. It never crossed my mind to consider RDG either dark or thriller though – I’ve just been approaching it as a straight fantasy.
One of the reasons I don’t hate Miyuki’s character despite his attitude problems is because he’s acting as great development for Izumiko, who clearly has some confidence and socialising issues (no great surprise considering her upbringing). Miyuki is the only person she ever stands up to or allows herself to get angry at, so like it or not he’s actually helping her.
As to Izumiko’s powers, I’m hoping we’ll get a proper explanation of that further down the road. It’s still quite early days yet, so I’m happy to give this show more time on that front.
