Red Data Girl Episode 4

Recap: Izumiko gets adjusted to her new school, which is apparently infested by magic shenanigans.

Well, I’m done. I’ve been trying to keep with this show. Ive tried to find just a little bit of something that I can love. Didn’t happen. The only thing this latest episode really achieved was making me want to eat these mythic beef bowls, which seem like a ridiculous prospect but they must actually exist right? The new characters weren’t particularly enthralling, and what I can assume is the main villain is just another weird lookin’ dude.

I’ve never been able to pinpoint exactly what doesn’t work for me with this show. There are a few different factors which could definitely affect the end result. I still do not like the main character, who more often than not is just standing around while the other characters actually do something about their respective situations. I don’t buy that this is supposed to develop into some sort of love story with Teen Jerkwad, not for a second, and I don’t like that they’ve been basically forcing that down our throats since episode 2.

I’m also not digging this Japanese Hogwarts kind of feel I get from the school, where everyone is magical and for some reason evil sorcerer children are allowed to attend even though it obviously makes no sense to help their abilities because for Christ’s sake they’re friggin evil. If I did find anything funny, it’s that Izumiko didn’t want to act scared around the homonculi for fear of being thought a bigot. I didn’t think that was that big of a problem considering how foreigners get treated in most anime.

With the airing of grievances out of the way, I say adieu. See you in a couple hours for SNAFU. At least then I’ll have some good things to talk about.

  1. I’ll be watching all the way to end, but mostly because I’m already over halfway in a 12-episode series, and I’m just a little curious to see how badly RDG trainwrecks itself by the end. I actually quite enjoyed the first episodes, particularly episode 3, but you’re probably right to drop it on episode 4 – so far its only gotten worse from here.
