The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat Episode 9

Yoto tries to figure out his connection with Emi. Apparently they have quite the past together. Meanwhile, Azuki has been acting all sorts of weird around him and he tries to understand why.

Am I the only one that doesn’t quite understand Ponta’s purpose in this story? We know he’s a friend of Yoto’s but other than his connection to Emi there’s really no reason for him to be there at all. The writing for all their backstory really confused me too, I thought that somehow Yoto used to live in Italy when he met Emi, not the other way around. All around this has definitely been my least favorite part of this show so far, no amount of swimsuit shenanigans can fix that.

It’s a little depressing watching Tsukiko struggle again in this episode. It’s so obvious that this plot arc doesn’t involve her that she has to shoehorn in any attempt to hang out with Yoto that she can. I imagine the swimming scene was meant to be cute but even that was kinda sad in its own way. Tsukiko can’t even manage to beat a child when it comes down to it.

Back to Azuki, and it turns out my possession angle was off a little. It does make sense, what with it being in the title, that we’d finally see an appearance by the titular cat. I really like its characterization here. It’s basically like the Genie in Aladdin but if he was a little malevolent. Something that grants wishes is always the servant, never the served, and in frustration the cat god is using other people to finally manipulate its wishes for itself.

I  really don’t like how this episode ended. I get the whole “kissing Azuki to get her attention” but then the second kiss just seemed like a tease. It’s pretty obvious that Yoto doesn’t care about her that way, but they keep doing all these things to make it seem like he could. I also find memory loss to be one of the lazier plot devices an author can use, so I was really getting annoyed with Yoto walking around going “Did I do that?” basically the entire time. They seem to be hinting at some big wish, but it’s hard to piece out what it is. I’m hoping the reveal is worth the frustration.
