First Impressions: Makai Ouji: Devils & Realist

Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist

Manga Adaptation by Dogakobo
Simulcast on Crunchyroll

Premise: A young man of nobility discovers he is actually the descendent of the Biblical Solomon and is contractually bound to a candidate for the ruler of the underworld. They also stare longingly into each others eyes. ANIME!

Meanwhile, in the basement

Jel’s Verdict: Royal Mess

Out of the triumvirate of Hot Dude shows I’ve covered so far, I’m putting Makai Ouji in the middle. While it lacked the structurally sound narrative of Free! it seems they at least hired a director, which is more than I can say for BROCON. Unfortunately I don’t think I can give it too much more credit than that as the actual plot and overall tone is a mess. The premise is already ridiculous as it is, and thats before Gilles de Rais randomly shows up. I also didn’t think the sparkly, goofy comedy bits fit well with the more passionate, hot blooded attempts at building serious conflict. To their credit it does seem like they are going to try and establish some kind of relationship between the two main dudes rather than just having them stand around and look pretty, but I’m highly skeptical this will turn into more than your average yaoi bait tease. Again, for your Hot Dude fix just go watch Free!.

You can probably work out the uke and seme here

Lifesong’s Verdict: Super Gay

Lets get this out of the way: Everyone in this show is probably gay. If you don’t like that then you should probably stay away. As for myself? I don’t like that so anything I say is weighted against the fact that I didn’t enjoy the episode. I felt like it was fairly well made and the fight scene between the demons was neat. The gimmicks between the characters do at least follow basic storytelling logic and setup a story that someone who wants to watch gay men duke it out might be able to appreciate. I’ve nothing else to say about this show.
