C3-Bu Episode 8

Recap: The C3 Club faces off against the other teams at the 24-hour tournament. Yura pushes the rest of the club to the edge, desperate to beat Rin and her mall ninjas.

Gee’s Thoughts: Yura’s gone into full tryhard mode this week, as she pushes the club to its limits for the sake of beating Rin. While her strategies are successful and the C3 Club goes to the finals, it’s quite obvious that the rest of the team is straining under the pressure. With tensions flaring and Yura having become a completely different person, it seems that she’s forgotten why she started playing airsoft in the first place: to have fun.

The conclusion of this episode is what really grabbed my attention. With the earlier moments in the episode alluding to being a “zombie,” the act of continuing play despite being hit, it should be no surprise that Yura ends up resorting to such devious behavior in her desire to win and please Sonora, completely missing the point of her senior’s lessons. As a former airsoft player, this is a common issue in the community due to the honor-rule based nature of the game. Unlike paintball, where there are clear indicators of being hit, the only person that can tell if someone’s been hit is themselves, and a high degree of honesty is expected from its players.

To see Yura not live up to the lofty standards airsoft requires is a distinct disappointment, but wonderful to behold in terms of characterization. This is the same Yura that couldn’t even hold onto her gun in the first few episodes, and to see her transform into someone so desperate to win is interesting if nothing else. That said, it’s obvious that her actions in this episode will come back to haunt her and I look forward to seeing Yura redeem herself.
