Back in the real world, Kirito tries to come to terms with the 3 people he killed during Sword Art Online while Sinon notices a change in her own feelings after her last battle.
This episode was OK as far as developing the plot but was dreadfully boring as it was 100% dialogue. I am still not on board with Kirito’s conveniently inserted tragic flashback, but if that’s the route we’re going I guess this was as good a direction as we could expect. I will at least give them credit for acknowledging that was something he should remember and that maybe forgetting was his coping mechanism, although I think that may have specifically applied to the people he killed and not the incident itself. On another note, pretty sure that nurse could be fired for hugging one of her patients that way, but we’ve already established Kirito’s animal magnetism is irresistible. Maybe that would hold up in court?
On the Sinon front my main issue this week was Best Friend Guy (not going to bother learning his name) starting to turn into a bit of a creeper, and the sad thing is I’m not sure how intentional that is supposed to be. I know it’s impossible to ponder that any other male character could be a romantic interest aside from Anime Jesus, but seriously this dude is starting to sound like one of those guys that complains about getting “friend zoned”. At least Suguha/Leafa’s impotent little male friend had the good sense to know his place. I don’t think Best Friend Guy would look good in a fedora, so hopefully he really does care about her and is just a bit confused at the moment.
As for Sinon herself, I guess I feel similar to Kirito’s situation in that this was probably the best they could do with the direction they chose, even though I don’t think they should have gone that way in the first place. I’m still not sure why Kirito got her so flustered, especially after all that’s she’s been through. I’d like to think it’s more than just developing a silly school girl crush on him, but I’m not getting my hopes up. I’m also not keen on the “your game self is your real self” message that has been the theme of Sword Art Online since the beginning. I’m sure I’ll have a lot more to say about that as it becomes more relevant. For now it looks like we’ll at least get back to more action and excitement and less talking with the tournament resuming, so we can at least look forward to that.
