GLORIO Spring 2015 Anime Guide Part 3

2015 Spring_3

The final part of our guide goes in strong on the nostalgia with new Digimon and Lupin III series, plus we get Trigger’s latest attempt to SAVE ANIME with Ninja Slayer. Meanwhile, I go against my better judgement and remain cautiously optimistic about Punchline and Yamda-kun and the 7 Witches, two comedies that probably won’t be winning any Anime of the Year awards. Maybe I’m just getting worn down by all this new anime? Take a look and decide for yourself.

Check out Part 1 of the guide here and Part 2 here.

My Love Story!!

Ore Monogatari!!

Manga Adaptation by Madhouse
Air Date: 4/9/2015
Takeo is resigned to the fact that he’s too huge and frightening for girls to like him until one day he saves a cute girl on the train. You can probably figure out the rest. While the results sound kind of predictable, I like the concept and this could be a really sweet romance story. Aside from the main characters appearance though, I can’t help but wonder it’s just going to be the typical shoujo trappings with a new coat of paint. I think it will still be worth a look, even if it doesn’t end up being the most original plot I’m all for a feel good romance story.

Triage X

Manga Adaptation by Xebec
Air Date: 4/9/2015
Even though no actual animation has been released yet, it’s pretty clear Triage X is this season’s new T&A show. It is by the same manga author as High School of the Dead, after all. This new series takes the nurse fetish thing to another level: a group of hospital staff secretly belong to a organization of vigilante assassins working to kill off bad people they deem the “cancer” of society. So basically girls with massive breasts fighting in skimpy outfits that vaguely resemble medical staff uniforms, got it. By the end of this paragraph you should already know whether you want to watch this or not, personally I’ll be fine skipping it.

Manga Adaptation by Shirogumi/Encourage Films
Air Date: 4/9/2015
So Etotama is about a cat girl that is trying to become part of the Chinese Zodiac but is free loading at some dude’s house until she figures it out. ANIME! I have no idea what one must do to become a part of the Chinese Zodiac but apparently this girl doesn’t either and it’s supposed to be funny. The “Magical Girlfriend” premise and super cute voices in the trailer aren’t doing much for me, and while I normally like Akio Watanabe’s character designs (The World God Only Knows, Monogatari series) they are skewing way too moe in this case. To be honest I’m not even sure it will be a full length series as opposed to a comedy short, but I guess we will find out soon enough.

Wish Upon the Pleiades

Houkago no Pleiades, Gainax Makes a Subaru Commercial

Anime Original by Gainax
Air Date: 4/10/2015
This project has been actually kicking around for a while now, dating back to the ONA that aired in 2011. The story is about a group of Magical Girls helping an alien return to its home in the Pleiades, which of course is the basis for name and logo of Subaru. Yes, this is basically a car ad. I did not watch the original ONA but from the latest trailer at least it looks like the Subaru product placement isn’t too intrusive. I’m assuming Subaru is footing the bill as it’s actually well animated… at least until the CG flying bits. I’m guessing this will be harmless and forgettable, but we’ll at least give it a look.

Anime Original by MAPPA
Air Date: 4/10/2015
People have been declaring the death of the Noitamina block for years now, and with a tagline like “Once He See Panties, Humanity Is Destroyed!?” it’s hard not to think that Punchline will be the final nail in the coffin. The story is about a boy who’s soul has been separated from his body that may possibly destroy the world if he gets aroused. Naturally, his house is then filled with cute girls that flash their panties at him. My gut feeling is there will be a lot more to it than that and I hope I’m right. The script is written by Kotaro Uchikoshi, known for cult hit Zero Escape novel game series as well as the popular visual novel Ever 17. It seems unlikely to me they would bring him in to write a trashy harem comedy. Plus, how bad could a show that has a super hero girl deflecting bullets with a giant drinking straw really be?

Yamada-kun and the 7 Witches

Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo

Manga Adaptation by Liden Films
Air Date: 4/12/2015
I mentioned in my Arslan write-up I’ve been wanting to see Liden Films (Aiura, Miss Monochrome, Terraformars) get a shot at a full length project and now they have two! Yamada-kun and the 7 Witches is a popular manga that has already spawned a live action series and an OVA. The plot revolves around a delinquent boy and the class president discovering they can swap bodies if they kiss. To investigate, they revive the Supernatural Club and discover more girls with different kiss activated powers. It sounds like a classic anime comedy setup, and I do love me some dumb anime comedy here and there. It could be funny if it keeps the perv factor low enough and I’m already impressed with the technical quality, so I actually kind of want to check this out.

Ninja Slayer

Novel Adaptation by Trigger
Air Date: 4/16/2015
Trigger’s latest attempt to SAVE ANIME adapts the popular novel/manga series Ninja Slayer – the story of a salaryman possessed by the soul of a ninja who uses his newfound powers to avenge the death of his family. The visual style is very unique and seem right in Trigger’s comfort zone, but I do get the feeling this will be more about style than substance. I felt that way through the first couple episodes of their last project, Kill la Kill, and that turned out OK, so maybe this will too.

Digimon Adventure Tri

Virtual Pet (!?) Adaptation by Toei Animation
Air Date: TBA
I know there’s no actual footage in the trailer I linked (there isn’t anything else available at the time of writing this) but I wanted to share it because all evidence points to this being a total play on nostalgia. Judging by most of our reactions, that’s OK. I was a bit too old to get hit with the Digimon bug so I’m immune, but most of the Glorio Crew is really excited for this. Tri takes place several years after the first series with the group now in high school, and they will presumably have to team up and save the world again. Not much else is known but I will say I love the new character designs by Atsuya Uki. Bringing in his distinct style was a bold move and supports the theory that this will be more aimed at the adult fans from 15 years ago than re-introducing Digimon to a new generation of kids. Again, I’m totally OK with that.

Lupin III (2015)

Manga Adaptation by Telecom Animation Film
Air Date: TBA
Anime’s most famous thief doesn’t really need me to introduce him, so let’s just review what we know: The new series will be set in Italy, Lupin has a blue jacket, and it will be written and directed by different staff than the recent Fujiko Mine series. Other than the fact that we’ve been told it will start airing this season in Italy before it airs in Japan, that’s about it. I’d love to see them retain the amazing art direction of Fujiko Mine, but everything I’m reading sounds like they want to write that off as a spinoff. It’s also a little troubling that we haven’t heard any other details this late in the game, but it’s Lupin so I’m sure everyone will watch it whenever it actually comes out.

  1. Triage X is a great manga with crazy action scenes, but I’m worried about the anime, I have a feeling it will be all about ecchi.

  2. Ugh Triage X…..A few here pique the interest a bit. I’m just not that stoked for spring. I’ll be looking into 7 witches, Ninja slayer, and Lupin. Even that feels generic.

    • Everything about 7 Witches is telling my brain ABORT MISSION but I just have gut feeling it might be better than it sounds. There is already an OVA that came out in December that I might check out if I find the time.

      • Ya same here. 1 dude. lots of girls. kissing. magic….Buuuut sometimes comedy gems can be found in the most ridiculous of concepts. Another good thing is you can basically tell 2-4 eps in if these shows are worth the time
