“Awakening Oboe”

Wednesdays 12:30 pm EDT on Crunchyroll

Kumiko can’t bring herself to tell Nozomi about Miyore, but the weight of keeping the secret begins to affect her focus. The situation reaches a breaking point when a still unaware Nozomi decides to talk to Miyore herself.

Jel’s Thoughts

I had my popcorn ready to watch some drama this week and the episode did not disappoint. You might argue it was a little too dramatic, particularly the scene with Yuko pinning Mizore on the ground. Say what you will about bow girl, when she loves she loves hard. Overall though, I think it worked great. Nearly every scene made me cringe, a sign that they’ve done a good job getting us invested in the situation.

One of the main reasons I think the Nozomi/Mizore drama works is that it’s still shown through Kumiko’s perspective. While we may not really care about Nozomi and Mizore all that much, seeing how it affects Kumiko, whom we do care about, keeps us interested. Further, it was nice to see her handle the situation in a believable way for her established character and personality, even though it might not have been the best solution. I think in a more conventional show the main character would have confronted Nozomi and tried to fix the situation head on. Instead we had Kumiko react in a more realistic way, feeling uncomfortable and somewhat accountable but still not sure she should get involved. You could almost understand Asuka’s decision not to intervene, as cold as it seemed at first. Sure the final outcome was about the same, but getting there in a more believable way gives it more impact.

I have to say I’m impressed with the pace that season 2 of Euphonium is moving along as I expected this particular set of drama to continue for the bulk of the season. I guess with the new characters seemingly out of the way, the big question is where do we go from here? Are there more old wounds to heal from the big senpai split? Will there be new challenges with the upcoming competition that we haven’t seen yet? One of the big open plot threads re-introduced this week is Kumiko’s sister, what has she been up to that has their parents so upset? Will Kumiko realize that Reina is starting to act like a jealous girlfriend and they’ll just make out already? There’s a lot of possible directions to go and I’m really looking forward to it.

To be honest, I thought the Mizore x Nozomi drama dragged a bit given that its issue was not only between side characters, essentially a simple misunderstanding, but most importantly not substantial enough to halt the band from its greater goal.

I mean, resolving this conflict in 4 episodes with one of them being double length (so basically 5) is a little much for something that boil down to nothing more than a small speed bump in the bigger picture.

    Good stuff nonetheless Jel 🙂

    • Oh I agree I wanted the Miyore/Nozomi drama to end, I just didn’t think it would. I’m glad we can move on to more important things now.
