Hey guys, I would just like to say thank you for your wonderful podcasts on Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I always look forward to listen to your thoughts on these episodes every second week.
About the next four episodes, I would definitely recommend watching them together or at least watch episode 51-53 together, because storywise it makes no sense to separate these three episodes. And episode 54 containes maybe one of the most iconic scenes from the series that I think plays well with the context in episode 53, and would make for at great in depth discussion.
Speaking of episodes, I know it will not be relevant for quite some time, but not matter what you guys decides to do, PLEASE make sure to watch episode 82-84 together. This is super important, you will know why when you get to them.

Hey, the enthusiasm is appreciated, but we’re watching the show for the first time, so calling out specific episodes as important kinda puts a damper on things because then we know that Something Important happens at that point, yknow? Like, I didn’t know anything important would happen at episode 54 or 82-84 and now I do, and that’s kind of disappointing since we’re trying to watch LoGH as fresh as possible.
Oh my god! I’m so sorry… it wasn’t meant as a spoiler, since I basically thought that something important happened every episode, but more like these episodes makes sense to watch together plotwise? But anyways, I’m really sorry if I spoiled anything for you guys, it wasn’t meant like that…
I think two per episode is the best for you guys since I do like you guys analyzing things and there is going to be a lot of that with the end of season big round up talk. It feels just like yesterday with a dying Kircheis getting Reinhard to promise to conquer the universe.
Also I’d like to note in terms of military achievements among the Reinhard admirals, Bittenfield for his pivotal role in beating old man Bewcock is 3rd behind Reuenthal and Mittermeyer capturing the Iserholn Fortress and Phezzan respectively. Also I will have it on record that Bittenfield’s recommendation of attacking the capital was the closest to Hilda’s plan to force the FPA to get Yang to surrender.
I’ve always found it interesting that the admirals for better or worse have a military perspective and never even mentioned going around Yang and just forcing the FPA to surrender even in just informal talks with each other. Reinhard talked about that even back in season one. He doesn’t have anyone other than Kircheis, Hilda or Oberstein to talk about non-military matters. Kircheis is dead and Oberstein surprisingly has little to say about non-empire stuff. The closest we got was him and Reinhard discussing about the future governance of Phezzan and the FPA. Plus there’s also the fact that it sets a bad precedent if your military officials start meddling in political matters even in the empire.
The two guys Reinhard finally settled on as adjutants are Streit with the white hair and Lucke the one with a brown hair. The former was the dude in Braunschweig’s camp that advocated Reihard be assassinated to avert a civil war. He got captured when Braunschweig fled the capital and Reinhard released him. Streit just sat out the civil war because he didn’t want to change sides just like that but recognized Braunschweig will be suspicious if he survived capture. As a noble he later had his stuff confiscated by the new Reinhard regime and came to ask for some of it back. Reinhard gave him an offer that he gets some of it back in exchange he has to serve him now. Politically, his admirals saw it as Reinhard being good at politics to get people that weren’t opposed to him but didn’t explicitly join him to actually commit to his new regime. The whole surrendered subordinate refusing to immediately serve another master because it would seem dishonorable but later serving some time later after a period of time is definitely something that happens in the romance of the three kingdoms that the series takes some inspiration from.
Lucke didn’t get that much screen time, he was kind of around the empire hq and was the guy at the door to Reinhard’s workroom that showed enough competence that once Reinhard lowered his standards for his adjutants to not being the ever perfect Kircheis, Lucke made the cut. In the novel I think he was mentioned being part of Kempf’s flagship. When the initial Yang and Kempf fight during Amlitzer was happening and Kempf was wondering why Yang was disengaging despite winning Lucke got the closest to guess that Yang was running away. Although the novel translated it differently so it might have been a different guy.
Yang’s reign of terror on the empire has spread to even the rank and file. The moment he appeared even after they won every empire fleet had their morale shaken when it looked like he had some secret plan when sadly he was just too late to do anything other than prevent a complete defeat like always.
If you want to learn more about that Bruce Ashbey guy that got mentioned when Yang became the youngest fleet admiral in FPA history, the gaiden episodes elaborate more about him. Even if you guys don’t do a podcast on them I think the gaiden series is cool. Very different from the series proper but its for those that finished the main series and wanted more.
