Humanity Has Declined Episode 4

Greatest Manga Ever or Best Manga Ever?

Recap: The Mediator is still trapped in the Fairy manga machine with her assistant and Y. Will Y’s manga obsession be the key to their escape?

[UPDATE: Apparently there was a scene after the credits that was not included on the Crunchyroll airing. It can be currently found here, so watch it while you still can.]

Jel’s Thoughts: Picking up from last week’s episode, Humanity continues to gleefully take aim at the manga industry and fickle fandoms in general. Much like the Mediator herself, this episode closes its eyes and smiles while at the same time eviscerating its target.

Watching episode 4 kind of reminded me of the old Bugs Bunny cartoon where the fourth wall is broken and the animator is just making stuff on the fly. In this case the power was in the hand of our cast and meant to be taken more literally, but it kind of had a similar vibe. While getting compared to an all time classic is overall a good thing, I do feel like they left some potential on the table. They had the option to do ANYTHING, but aside from the scene in the screencap above and a few quick drawings they only suggested some of the crazy ideas they explored. I’m not going to be too hard on them since there was obviously time constraints to consider, but it would have been cool to see more.

It's funnier when you can read the board

One way they did compensate for not actually showing their ideas was letting Miyuki Sawashiro just go crazy. She really owned this episode, exploring all kinds of characters even if only for a line or two. I’m curious what Y will do now that the manga arc seems to be over. It would be cool to have her stick around but I’m not sure if she’s going to be relevant after this episode. Well I guess you could say I’m not really sure of ANYTHING with Humanity, and I am totally OK with that.

Iro’s Thoughts: Bakuman’s entire plot condensed into half an episode.

Fight your apathy by watching Humanity Has Declined on Crunchyroll.
