Premise: Kiri loves hair. Like, REALLY loves hair. So when he finds a mysterious girl with more hair than she can handle, it seems a dream come true. But things are not all they seem…
Zigg’s Verdict: Nothing up top
Holy shit this is bad. Like, really, really bad. Let’s leave aside the dubious hair fetishism for a second (and make no mistake, I’m classing this one as a fetish) and instead criticise it on more practical grounds. Such as the complete absence of any sort of setup, failure to define your characters and your lead beyond being a massive creeper, the rough, ugly animation and the supremely unappealing character design.
The angst feels forced and unnecessary – there’s no real world equivalent to uncuttable hair, but I’m not certain it’s enough to drive someone to being suicidal, and the fact that we actually get a ‘sad girl in snow’ scene is pretty unforgivable. The entire episode is just pervaded with a creepy, stalkerish vibe (the bit where he talks about looking at women’s hair is unnerving) and while it’s pretty clear this is just a precursor to the actual plot, it’s still rubbish enough to turn me off of the show in general.
Marlin’s Verdict: Barely misses the cut
A few people told me going in that this was pretty bad, but coming out I really didn’t see it so harshly. It’s certainly not the greatest thing to come out here, but it at least did its part to establish the plot pretty well. I’ll admit the main character is super creepy, but I’m pretty sure he’s supposed to be, most likely because of this whole “Killing Tools” business. I’m at least going to give it another shot to see where exactly this plot is going.
Lifesong’s Verdict: Hope You Like Hair
Crime Edge’s first episode establishes a relationship between a hair fetishist and a girl with immortal hair. It’s finds a balance somewhere between kind of cute and entirely creepy. The setup is undeniably dumb, but I have to admit that I had fun watching it. Despite the silly premise, there is potential for this to be an interesting supernatural romance.
The protagonist is completely in love with this girl’s hair and as silly as that sounds it had a certain charm to it. The creepy vibes create a good sense of atmosphere and the hints we get about the girl’s “care takers” build on that. Beyond the relationship of the protagonist and the girl’s hair, not much is established. I will be giving this one another episode to see what direction the plot will take.
Iro’s Verdict: Hairy Situation
Did she never think about like tying up her hair or something? And who commits serial murder with comb scissors anyway?
