GLORIO Winter 2015 Anime Guide Part 1

2015 Winter_1

The Glorio crew is currently working on a proper send off for 2014, but new anime waits for no one and it’s time to look at the new shows from the upcoming season. Winter 2015 is bringing us lots of big name sequels, a few intriguing anime originals, and a dumpster fire full of light novel adaptations with awful sounding premises. Part 1 of our guide is headlined by Lily Bear Storm, the latest work of the delightfully insane Kunihiko Ikuhara and, while I’m loathe to admit it, the anime based on the phenomenon that is Kantai Collection. We know what we’ll be watching, how about you guys and gals out there?

[Part 2 of the guide is now available, check it out here.]

Tsukimonogatari

Light Novel Adaptation by Shaft
Air Date: 12/31/2014
Tsukimonogatari kicks off the third and final season of Monogatari, theoretically centering on the delightfully odd Yotsugi. Judging by the fact that Araragi doesn’t have super long vampire hair it might actually take place before the end of season 2, but I’m not going to pretend I understand the series timeline anymore. I’ve always found Yotsugi amusing and it looks like this arc will bring back the series’ sense of humor that was conspicuously absent from the previous Hanamonogatari, but as always that’s a double edged sword as a lot of “humor” is just Araragi being a perv. For long time fans like me it’s too late to turn back now, so I’ll be watching regardless.

Absolute Duo

Light Novel Adaptation by 8-bit
Air Date: 1/4/2015
I’m just going to warn everyone now, there are a LOT of light novel adaptations this season that all sound like hot garbage. This is actually one of the least awful sounding ones, relatively speaking. Certain people can manifest a “blaze”, a special magic weapon that comes out of your soul. Kind of like Persona but swords instead of horrible monsters. ANYWAY our main dude has a Blaze but it turns out to be a shield instead of a weapon and becomes partners with a beautiful girl as part of their school’s “Duo” system. Sure it sounds very uninspired and the character designs scream “light novel cover” so loud that they border on parody, but at least it doesn’t sound offensive?

Lily Bear Storm

Yuri Kuma Arashi

Anime Original by Silverlink
Air Date: 1/5/2015
The return of infamous director Kunihiko Ikuhara, the evil mastermind behind cult masterpieces Revolutionary Girl Utena and Penguindrum. I could try and pass along current descriptions floating around involving girls in love with each other and turning into bears, but knowing Ikuhara that’s all probably going out the window after an episode or two. The fact that I have no clue where this is going, coupled with the other fact that Penguindrum is one of my favorite anime of all time, has me really excited and you should be to.

Handsome High School Earth Defense Club Love!

Binan Koukou Chikyuu Boei Bu Love!

Anime Original by Diomedea
Air Date: 1/6/2015
So a bunch of magical boys steal the Houkago Tea Time logo and fight Utena Tenjou? This looks silly. For the actual plot, that pink wombat thing in the trailer visits an ordinary high school and turns a group of boys into the “Earth Defense Club”, presumably to defend the Earth. I guess that still doesn’t rule out my first sentence happening, so maybe this will be fun.

The Testament of Sister New Devil

Shinmai Maou no Testament

Light Novel Adaptation by Production IMS
Air Date: 1/7/2015
Our main character has always wanted a little sister and his dad delivers by picking up two when he remarries. The only problem is, one is a devil and the other is a succubus. This looks like it will be bad in every way, from the dumb premise to the gross character designs to the atrocious animation on display in the trailer. Watch the bit around 1:28 and try not to laugh at how bad it looks. My condolences to whichever Glorio crew member has to cover this.

Kantai Collection

Game Adaptation by Diomedea
Air Date: 1/7/2015
Entry #1 in Diomedea’s competition with itself to make the worst show of the season. More on that in a bit… Actually, the trailer for this adaptation of the INSANELY popular game looks like a lot of effort is going into it. The animation and character design looks solid and I suppose going the light hearted slice of life route would work better for the target demographic. Of course that also means it looks super boring. I’d much rather have that effort put into some crazy elaborate battle scenes. Either way I couldn’t care less about KanColle, so might as well give the people what they want.

Unlimited Fafnir

Juuou Mujin no Fafnir

001

Light Novel Adaptation by Diomedea
Air Date: 1/8/2015
Entry #2 in Diomedea’s competition with itself to make the worst show of the season, and this one sounds like a contender. Certain girls known as “D” are born with dragon powers. Our hero is the world’s first male “D” who is forced to attend an all girls D school where he undoubtedly picks up a harem of girls, including his long lost little sister. Yes folks, they’ve finally made an anime where the girls literally want the D. There’s no trailer for this yet, but look at the art then scroll back up to Absolute Duo and see if you can tell the difference between the two silver haired girls. Please don’t make us watch this.

How to Train Your Dragon an Ordinary Girl to be a Heroine

Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata, SaeKano

Light Novel Adaptation by A-1 Pictures
Air Date: 1/8/2015
A desperate Otaku models the heroine of his doujin game after one of his classmates and assembles a team of creative talent to get the game done for Comiket. My patience has long worn thin for otaku-centric comedies, and this is coming from the guy known for his Keima Katsuragi avatar. Thrown on top of that my general hatred for art about creating art and this just makes my stomach turn thinking about the potential amount of self indulgence here. At least the trailer looks nicely animated as A-1 pictures burns some of that Sword Art Online money and the content looks inoffensive despite a premise that leaves plenty of opportunity to perv out, so maybe there will be more to this than what it sounds like.

Koufuku Grafiti

Manga Adaptation by Shaft
Air Date: 1/8/2015
Having seen bits of the manga I can say this is going to be food porn, by which I mean it’s cute girls making insanely detailed food and then enjoying it maybe a little too much. It’s the exact kind of weird and occasionally gross premise I would expect Shaft to turn into an artistic, visually fascinating experience. The trailer doesn’t give anything away (when does Shaft ever have anything animated in time for a trailer?) so I’m at least looking forward to how they interpret it. Whether or not I can stomach watching more than one episode though will remain to be seen.

  1. Sigh, even this partial list of the anime lineup doesn’t excite me. So many of the shows come off as cliche, trashy anime titles you wouldn’t be proud of broadcasting to anyone out there, anime fan or otherwise.

We all can’t expect every anime title to be gold, but this is mostly … awful at face value. 😦

  2. Ugh should I even bother with part 2 of the 2015 guide? We end 2014 with some epic anime, and start 2015 with a sorry lot.
