Premise

In the future, gifted students have been gathered as a special tech development wing of a megacorporation. After wasting ridiculous amounts of money trying to rescue their new classmate, it seems changes are in store.

Marlin’s verdict: Robotics;Notes 2. That is not a compliment.

I’m a bit wary of this after getting burned pretty badly by Robotics;Notes substandard “school kids making rad tech” plot developed into absolute nonsense. With this show already operating on a weird cyberpunk-esque corporation state system, I’m already not liking how things are going. It’s obviously going to be about how these kids show how their hard work or whatever nonsense justifies their ridiculously immense budget as they soften up the most stereotypical corporate heir character since DR’s Byakuya Togami, who I may remind you is supposed to be a parody of that entire trope. Having an aloof character that doesn’t seem to have any good reason to be so aloof is another strike already, so something tells me I’m not going to be keeping up with this one.

Jel’s verdict: Passing Grade

I think I wanted to like Classroom Crisis a lot more than I did. I love the not-to-distant future setting and the attempt at hard sci-fi, taking engineering, expenses, and other practical considerations into account to a degree you don’t usually see in anime shows. That said, those are not the most exciting elements to kick a show off with and this episode was kind of boring. For a stretch I was expecting the teacher to be the main character, a good natured rogue trying to fight the system on the inside. I’d watch that show! Instead we got another cold, emotionless ace with super human talents. On paper it’s cool that we get a girl in that role for once, but I that didn’t make her any more interesting. The other big issue is this may have just been a prologue as the main plot settles into saving the class. I get the feeling it will probably be more slice of life comedy instead of space hostage rescue missions. Still, there’s enough good here to give Classroom Crisis another shot, we’ll have to see which direction it goes.

Artemis’ verdict: Snoozefest

Honestly, this  just seems like just an excuse to get a bunch of cute schoolgirls in one place to me. On paper, the plot sounds like it might have a bit of weight to it, but in reality, I’m reasonably sure that the sci-fi aspects of the show exist primarily in order to sound original; this comes across more as a high school slice-of-life series than anything else. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, and in all fairness, Classroom Crisis isn’t all about the girls and their front-zip body suits – there are at least two main male characters, and several other male supporting characters. However, the main focus looks like it’s going to be on Mizuki and Iris, who I have little interest in, and there’s nothing special in either the visuals or the music to make up for that. I don’t think this is a terrible show, but it bored me enough that I barely made it through the episode without falling asleep.

  1. The last high-schoolers “IN SPACE!” anime I watched was Valvrave the Liberator…

That was not a good anime. Classroom Crisis probably won’t wind up much better, but hopefully it’s not similarly terrible.

    • Oh man, Valvrave was terrible, but it would be pretty hilarious if this kind of show could somehow turn out like that hot mess.

    • I’m predicting this goes the exact opposite direction of Valvrave. Like, aggressively boring. The entire anime will be about designing engine parts and balancing budgets. Maybe an episode about debating which lubricant to use to grease the landing gear? Actually, I would probably watch that…
