Premise

Mahiro is a deadbeat shut in who sleeps all day and plays eroge all night. One day he wakes up and discovers Mihari, his mad scientist little sister, has turned him into… her little sister.

At first glance, ONIMAI appears to be a throw back to the imouto anime craze of the late 2000s/early 2010s. It does indeed feature an inappropriate relationship between an older sibling and a younger sibling, but it’s oh so much worse than that. The little sister bits and even the gender bending take a backseat to the series true purpose: ogling a very young girl’s body. I feel gross even saying that, so you can just imagine how it feels watching it.

The episode makes a laughable attempt at establishing reasons for all this. There’s some half baked plot about Mihari wanting to rehabilitate her onii-chan, and how Mahiro ended up underachieving in life… because their sister was always good at everything??? This is completely undermined by the fact that Mihari has done all of this without consent and has been secretly spying on Mahiro with a hidden camera. In a vacuum, the way they explore gender might not seem too bad, but honestly It’s only here as an excuse to put a half naked little girl on screen. It’s never my place to say this definitively, but I’m pretty sure this ain’t the trans rep you’re looking for.

Yes, everything that happens in this episode leads back to fetishizing a child. Either by zooming the camera in on lingerie and bare skin, or making your brain think about it. You know you’re truly watching a masterpiece when there are lovingly animated scenes of the main character sitting down to pee for the first time, or getting their bust measured for a bra at the mall, or when their sister explains the power of the clitoral orgasm. Because, you know, Mahiro really wants to get back to whacking off to anime porn games.

Needless to say, this was gross and you shouldn’t watch it. I feel bad for the staff that had to work on it, who actually did a great job in terms of the technical quality. If you want a recent comedy that laughs at the absurdity of gender, I am going to tentatively recommend last year’s Life with an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout. That show is far from perfect, but I can guarantee it’s a lot better than this.
