Akira Fudo is a sensitive young man with a good heart, but lacks the bravery or ambition to do much with his life. When his best friend Ryo Asuka shows up and reveals to him the existence of demons that have returned from their age long slumber to conquer the Earth, Akira must merge with the devil Amon and become Devilman, the one who can combine the raw destructive power of a devil with the good soul of a human being.

After she gets a humiliating scolding from the diligent, aloof student council president Mei on her very first day, things couldn’t possibly get any worse for Yuzu — until she finds out none other than Mei is to be her new step-sister, and they’ll be living under the same roof. Oh, and Mei sexually assaults her a couple of times, but the official summaries conveniently forget to mention that.
High school boy Kouta Hasegawa has a love of Sanrio characters, but was bullied as a child for his ‘girly’ tastes and is now too ashamed to display his love openly. Feeling as though he is missing out on something important in life, he nonetheless goes about his high school days as usual – that is until he bumps into a popular group of boys with a similar affection for Sanrio characters, at least one of whom is entirely honest about his hobby.
These martial arts people have a dark secret, and it’s that they do real fighting against monsters, and gosh it is a surprise when it is revealed in the first scene of the show.
Men of all ages compare and wage wars over the size of their crests. Our hero has great ambitions to serve as a lord and protect his people from monsters, something which the current rulers aren’t doing, but his crest is too tiny. Fortunately, a mage in a miniskirt helps him out.
Yes, I know new shows are already starting and we’re already putting out first looks, but there are still a few shows to preview. Part 3 of our guide is headlined by Darling In the FranXX, a big name collaboration between Trigger and A-1 Pictures. We also have yet another Fate project, this time in the hands of the infamous Shaft director Akiyuki Shinbo. Will they be good? Maybe not, but definitely worth keeping an eye on.

You know what’s weird? Kyoto Animation has not done a TV series in a year, the last one being Ms. Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid in the Winter 2017 season. Consider that one more thing to add to hype machine around their stunning Violet Evergarden, which headlines second part of our Winter 2018 preview guide. The rest of Part 2 is a bit of a mixed bag, but there seems to be a few other shows worth checking out. What’s everyone else got their on eye on?
Dissatisfied with the lackadaisical life she’s been living up to now, Mari Tamaki decides to skip school and venture out into the unknown, but is too scared to eventually go through with it. One evening, she comes across an envelope dropped by a girl, and discovers it contains one million yen. She soon learns that the girl, Shirase Kobuchizawa, has been saving up the money to travel to Antarctica and find her missing mother.

2017, despite being something of a garbage fire of a year, ended up being pretty good for anime. Between some original standouts, old franchises returning to form, and some excellent adaptations, anime is as fresh as it’s ever been, even in the face of some truly offensive offerings. As my life gets busier, I find I end up watching less than I’d like, but nonetheless, here’s my arbitrary list of awards that give me an excuse to talk about some of that anime.
It’s that time of year again, and Iro’s resurrecting his motley collection of arbitrary-awards-that-really-just-started-as-jokes-but-I-guess-it’s-tradition-now. Who wins the year’s Yamato 2199 award, Zeppeli award, or Love Lab award? Read ahead to find out!
Despite the dearth in truly outstanding shows, there have been a lot of good romances and feel good moments for me to love this past year. A big focus has been awkward spazzes and the nerds who love them, so here’s a toast! Whether it’s playing shogi and make sure a bullied girl knows she’s not alone, taking a silent grouch on random photo shoots, or coming out of your shell to find out your best online friend makes a better boyfriend, we’ve had a lot of dorks out to steal our heart.
