GLORIO Spring 2016 Anime Guide Part 1

2016 Spring_1

A little later than usual, but it’s time once again to check out the hot new shows for next season. Winter had the strongest batch of shows overall that we’ve seen in a long time, so Spring 2016 has some big shoes to fill. Part 1 of our guide gets us off to a good start with the return of Jojo and the adaptation of popular manga My Hero Academia. Macross Delta is also totally happening this time, I promise.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable

Jojo no Kimyou na Bouken: Diamond wa Kudakenai

Manga Adaptation by David Production
Air Date: 4/2/2016
Do I even need to explain Jojo at this point? CAN I even explain it? The fourth arc of the series takes place about 10 years after Stardust Crusaders in which the newest Jojo and his stand wielding high school pals solve murder mysteries in their relatively normal home town. So basically, it’s Persona 4 with more punching and weirder super powers. Sounds good to me.

Kuma Miko: Girl Meets Bear

Manga Adaptation by Kinema Citrus
Air Date: 4/3/2016
A young shrine maiden wants to go to school, so her giant talking bear guardian tries to prepare the naive, sheltered girl for life in the big city. Sounds like a really fun premise and the trailer looks ADORABLE, so it definitely looks like something worth checking out.

My Hero Academia

Boku no Hero Academia

Manga Adaptation by Bones
Air Date: 4/3/2016
A young boy who wants to be a hero is granted a super power or “quirk” after bravely trying to save a classmate and begins attending a school that trains new heroes. The description doesn’t sound very exciting, but the comic book inspired art style and interesting spins on super powers are very appealing. Our own Gee-man swears by the manga, so unless they ruin the adaptation this should be good.

Anime Original by Brains Base
Air Date: 4/3/2016
A young man accidentally finds himself in “Endra”, a fantasy world that exists beneath the surface of the Earth. In his quest to return home he teams up with an angry local dude out for revenge against the king. If there’s any doubt Brains Base is the premier “skinny pretty dudes in fantasy settings” anime company, this 2 cour original series cements it. Unlike some of their previous outings though, this looks like some effort was put into the story and production beyond eye candy. While it will be hard to top the amazing musical train wreck of Dance with Devils, maybe this could be legit good?

Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World

Re:Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu, Re:Life in a Different World From Zero

Light Novel Adaptation by White Fox
Air Date: 4/3/2016
Dude ends up in an alternate world where he is saved by a pretty girl but then they die and he finds out he can rewind time blah blah yawn. The fact that this is based on an amateur light novel contest winner probably says it all. It looks pretty serious and not pervy at all, so at least it has that going for it. Hopefully it can prove me wrong.

Macross Delta

Anime Original by Satelight/Studio Nue
Air Date: 4/3/2016
OK, here’s what happened: I previewed this last season and said it was coming out 12/31. What ACTUALLY came out was a preview that consisted of most of episode 1. I have avoided watching that or reading anything else about it, so you can read my unchanged previous thoughts on it and know that it is definitely coming out this time.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Gyakuten Saiban

Game Adaptation by A-1 Pictures
Air Date: 4/4/2016
I’m kind of surprised it’s taken this long to properly adapt Ace Attorney, the game is already super anime as it is. It looks like they are starting from the beginning and as with most adaptations I have a feeling it will be geared toward existing fans. If you are a newcomer, it’s basically the story of an up and coming defense lawyer and the weird goofballs around him. You’ll probably be better off playing the games.

Light Novel Adaptation by Production IMS
Air Date: 4/4/2016
A mysterious life form is attacking Earth and our hero is training to wield the “Hundred”, the only weapon capable of stopping it. That sounds fine, until you realize the show is actually about being in an academy with pretty anime girls. The boob grab at the end of the trailer lets you know they understand exactly what they are doing. Should you decide to actually watch this, grab a stiff drink, break out your Light Novel Mad Libs Bingo card, and hope it’s enough of a train wreck to be entertaining.

Manga Adaptation by TMS Entertainment
Air Date: 4/4/2016
If “anime girls who love motorcycles” is the new “anime girls who love airsoft guns”, I might be OK with this. I really have no clue what to expect as the premise is seriously just a high school girl decides she likes motorcycles and tries to get her license. Does that mean boring motocycle fetishism, or will we get something weird and/or hilarious as we’ve seen with other shows aimed at very specific hobbyists? I’d say it’s at least worth finding out.

Holy War Cerberus: Fatalité of Dragon Time

Seisen Cerberus: Ryuukoku no Fatalité

Game Adaptation by Bridge
Air Date: 4/4/2016
This trailer kicks off with an extremely busty scared girl in chains and a dude in all black (including sword) that is clearly supposed to look cool. Not a great start. The rest is a grab bag of generic fantasy anime characters that don’t interest me in the least. Then we get to the plot about three kingdoms at odds and some evil dragon that can probably kill them all etc etc that’s basically so boring I don’t feel like writing it. Yeah, not feeling this one.

  1. I honestly believe Hundred’s title is a reference to how many times the exact same show has been done this past year.

    • I probably could have swapped in a trailer for season 2 of Asterisk Wars, which is also airing this season, and no one would notice.

      • You could do that AND swap out the plot summary. Maybe you should, as a social experiment to see how many people actually notice.
