A thought that occurred to me listening to the Robotech discussion. Harmony Gold claims that all rights to international distribution Macross sequels are held by them. Big West/Studio Nue claim that they have it. If Funimation license from both of them, then they are covered either way, and can broadcast Macross Frontier—that would be the only reason I can think of for buying the Robotech license in 2019.
I can only speculate, but I doubt Studio Nue had anything to do with this deal. I didn’t want to spend too much time on it during recording, but I think you also have to factor in Satelight’s stake in this for Frontier and Delta, since they produced those series. It’s a real mess.
Even if that were the case, releasing Frontier would conflict with Harmony Gold protecting the Robotech brand/continuity. They would never agree to it unless they could release it as “Robotech Frontier” or something, and there is no way in hell that will ever happen.
